Science of Reading Aligned

Fluency is a key part of the Science of Reading because it connects word recognition to comprehension. When students can read smoothly and automatically, their attention shifts from decoding to understanding. These poetry activities support fluency through repeated readings, rhythm, and phrasing practice, giving students multiple opportunities to hear, read, and perform a familiar poem.

Standards

  • RL.1.2 – Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson. Students retell the poem through sequencing strips, mini books, and visualization activities.
  • RL.1.4 – Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses. Students identify and discuss phrases that show sound, rhythm, or emotion.
  • RF.1.2 – Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds. Students identify rhyming pairs and listen for repeated sound patterns.
  • RF.1.3 – Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. Students decode words in fill-in-the-blank poems and read mini books for repeated practice.
  • RF.1.4 – Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. Students build fluency through repeated readings of familiar poems and songs.
  • RF.1.4a – Read on-level text with purpose and understanding. Students reread poems with clear purpose and comprehension.
  • RF.1.4b – Read grade-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings. Students practice reading with accuracy, phrasing, and expression using modeled reading from the poem’s video.

There’s no prep required: just print or assign digitally.
