Activities are differentiated so students can write at their own level, from individual words to complete sentences and short paragraphs.

  • Winter Vocabulary Cards (two types) – Print, laminate, and cut out word cards and add to a small pocket chart at your writing center. Students use the cards to sort vocabulary words or feed to the winter puppets. (Puppet game directions included)

Digital Writing Activities (W.1.6 – Writing using digital tools)

  • Writing Activities: Students drag and drop an image of the vocabulary words to the center of the slide, then type the word and use it in a sentence.
  • Vocabulary Activities: Students swipe through vocabulary slides, read the words and sentences aloud and write them on one of the writing templates.

Differentiation

Students work on the same first grade writing activities, but with different expectations based on their skill level. Some students may write words independently, some might write sentences, and some may be ready for short paragraphs.

W.1.2 – Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.
W.1.3 – Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide some sense of closure.
W.1.6 – With guidance and support, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.
W.1.8 – With guidance and support, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
