Each center provides writing activities that build vocabulary and support independent writing at varied skill levels. With writing templates, vocabulary tools, and engaging tasks, students can write words, sentences, or short paragraphs. Aligned to 1st grade standards and Science of Reading practices, these writing centers help students practice writing independently.

  • Digital activities on Google Slides
  • Fall Vocabulary Poster – Print, laminate, and post at your writing center. Or, slide poster into student writing folders. Students refer to the poster throughout their writing time for writing ideas, correct spelling, and picture references
  • Fall Vocabulary Cards (two types) – Print, laminate, and cut out word cards and add to a small pocket chart at your writing center. Students use the cards to sort vocabulary words or feed to the fall puppets. (Puppet game directions included)

Digital Writing Activities (W.1.6 – Writing using digital tools)

  • Students drag and drop an image of the vocabulary words to the center of the slide, then type the word and use it in a sentence.
  • Students swipe through vocabulary slides, read the words and sentences aloud and write them on one of the writing templates.

Differentiation

Students work on the same first grade writing activities, but with different expectations based on their skill level. Some students may write words independently, some might write sentences, and some may be ready for short paragraphs.

Each activity in the September Writing Centers Bundle is designed to help students independently practice their current writing skills. This ensures each student can complete their writing center tasks successfully.

Can I use this writing center for whole group instruction in 1st grade?

Yes! The 1st grade writing activities are designed to be flexible. Use them for writer’s workshop, independent writing centers, or free writing time.

What writing standards are supported by this first writing resource?​

W.1.2 – Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.
W.1.3 – Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide some sense of closure.
W.1.6 – With guidance and support, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.
W.1.8 – With guidance and support, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
